Melvin Chepchumba’s Story – Courage That Protected Others

Melvin Chepchumba is 14 years old and currently in Grade 6. She lives in the hills of Lomut, in Sigor, an area where harmful traditional practices remain a serious risk for girls.

Melvin lives with her elderly grandmother in a small grass-thatched hut. The family faces extreme poverty, and Melvin’s circumstances are particularly vulnerable as she is being raised away from her single parent.

In December 2025, Melvin became aware that she was at risk of being included in a harmful practice planned within the village. Through observing changes in behaviour and familiar patterns from past events in the area, she realised something was wrong.

Instead of staying silent, Melvin showed remarkable courage.

She quietly left and reported her concerns to a trusted village elder, who immediately alerted the local authorities. Because of this timely action, the situation was stopped before harm could occur. Other girls who were also at risk were protected, and the matter was brought under official monitoring to ensure their continued safety.

Melvin’s actions helped safeguard four other girls, preventing a situation that could have had lifelong consequences. As a result, community oversight was put in place during the holiday period to ensure no further harm occurred.

Speaking out was not easy. Melvin’s decision has caused tension within her family, and she currently faces emotional challenges as a result of choosing protection over silence. Despite this, her bravery has made a lasting difference.

Melvin’s story is a powerful reminder that education, awareness, and safe reporting channels save lives. When girls are supported and listened to, they can protect not only themselves — but others too.

One Woman at a Time continues to work in communities like Lomut to ensure girls are safe, supported, and able to stay in school.

One brave voice can protect many.
