Mercy’s Story: From Survival to Sustainability

Mercy is a fisherman’s wife from Niger, Nigeria, and a proud mother of nine children. Her story is one of resilience, resourcefulness, and the transformative power of small acts of kindness.

When my partner Jack encountered Mercy, she was being pushed up a mountain path in a wheelbarrow, in labour, on her way to the hospital. With no transport available, this was her only option. Jack immediately offered her a ride, ensuring she arrived safely. Just five minutes after arriving, Mercy gave birth to a healthy baby boy, whom she proudly named “Black Jack” in gratitude for the kindness shown to her.

Fast forward a year, and Mercy’s determination to improve her family’s circumstances was evident. She had already started making her own money and was filled with excitement about her growing family and opportunities. When we returned ten days after the birth, we asked if she would like mosquito nets to protect her family from malaria. Her response was both surprising and inspiring.

Instead of mosquito nets, she asked for two goats. “The mosquito nets will rot,” she explained, “but two goats make three goats.” Her logic was simple but profound: with two goats, she could build a sustainable future by breeding and selling livestock, providing long-term support for her family.

Her request highlighted the importance of listening to the needs of the community and providing practical solutions that empower individuals to create lasting change. Mercy’s choice reflected her forward-thinking and entrepreneurial spirit, which we were eager to support.

Today, Mercy’s story serves as a powerful reminder that small opportunities can lead to significant transformation. By empowering individuals like her with resources tailored to their unique needs, we can help communities create sustainable solutions and brighter futures.
