Silvia Cherop is 15 years old and comes from the Pokot community. Her story reflects the strength of a mother determined to create a different future for her daughter.
Silvia’s mother experienced significant hardship from a very young age due to harmful traditional practices and gender inequality. These experiences shaped her life and limited her opportunities, leaving a lasting impact on her wellbeing and stability.

Years later, when Silvia was growing up, her mother made a firm decision that her daughter would not face the same challenges. When pressure arose that threatened Silvia’s safety and education, her mother chose to protect her child — even when doing so meant leaving familiar surroundings and starting again elsewhere.
Mother and daughter moved to Ortum, seeking safety, support, and opportunity. It was there that Silvia’s mother learned about One Woman at a Time, through the Ortum Girls programme coordinated locally by Moses Lokeris.
Through this support, Silvia has been given the chance to remain safe, continue her education, and grow up with hope for a brighter future. Her story is a powerful example of how courage, timely support, and education can help families break long-standing cycles and open new paths forward.
By supporting girls like Silvia, we help protect childhoods and empower the next generation to thrive.
