Iyang’s Story: Shining a Light on the Stigma of Albinism

Meet Iyang, a bright and beautiful three-year-old girl from Nigeria who has already faced challenges most of us could never imagine. Born with albinism, Iyang lives in a rural community where her condition is met with misunderstanding and superstition. In her culture, albinism is tragically seen by some as a sign of being a witch, leading to isolation, discrimination, and a lack of opportunities.

Iyang’s father works tirelessly as a security guard, earning just £23 a month, but this meagre income cannot stretch far enough to provide the care and protection his daughter desperately needs. No local school will accept her, and even more distressing, Iyang lives under the constant threat of being stolen. In some parts of Nigeria, children with albinism are at risk of being exploited for harmful practices, as superstition links their body parts to potions believed to bring good luck or healing.

Thankfully, Iyang has found a haven with Martha’s Dream, a local charity in Nigeria dedicated to protecting and supporting children like her. Here, she is cared for and kept safe from the dangers that surround her. But the fight for Iyang’s future doesn’t stop there.

One Woman At A Time is committed to making a difference for children like Iyang. Through community education and training, we aim to tackle the misconceptions around albinism and reduce the stigma that isolates these children and their families. When funds allow, we also hope to sponsor more children with albinism, ensuring they have access to education, healthcare, and the safety they deserve.

Iyang’s story is a reminder of the urgent need for awareness and action. By supporting initiatives like One Woman At A Time, you can help children like Iyang shine bright and live the happy, fulfilling lives they deserve.

Together, we can break the cycle of stigma and ensure that no child is ever defined by harmful myths or superstitions.
